About the Studio
Nine Patch Studio is in the National Historic Landmark village, Waterford, Virginia, where Kathie Ratcliffe lives and works. A quilt artist and collector of antique quilts for 35 years, she combines her needlework skills with her passion for 19th century pieced quilts. As a result, her work in quilts of all sizes reflects the progression in palette and design of a dynamic century in American quilt art.
Using her growing knowledge of antique quilts and textiles, she began piecing quilts at miniature scale, each inspired by an actual 19th century quilt or quilt pattern. This new direction gave her the opportunity to make quilts in distinctive regional genres and to document 19th century trends in fabrics and design styles, using the same vibrant colors and patterns that made the originals so exceptional. Now, with the lovely designs and colors of antique quilts in miniature scale, these warm and joyful works of art can grace your walls and preserve the richness of our quilt heritage.
Kathie’s continuing challenge and joy is to use the inspiration of a favorite antique quilt and capture its essence in very small pieces. Her miniature quilts have appeared in the finest Americana shows and are in private collections nationally and beyond
